The third reporter piece I did was a profile piece on a family raising an autistic son. I went out to Suffolk Downs for the Walk for Autism Speaks, which seeks to raise awareness about autism. I interviewed Deirdre Legge, Co-Chair of the Greater Boston Walk Now for Autism Speaks about her and her family’s experience.

Here is the piece, which aired on October 13, 2010 for EIV News at 9:

The piece is very good in that it takes a larger issue and really personalizes it. Many people (including myself before I did the piece) really don’t know what raising an autistic child means for the family. In terms of the technical side of things, my camera work could have been better at some points, and my standup isn’t thrilling (it was bright out and I was squinting), but overall it’s a pretty good piece.

One challenge I had was that I had to be careful when interviewing her son because he does not know yet that he has autism (like she said in the piece, they’re waiting to tell him until he’s ready), so I had to ask general questions.

I had a classmate with me who helped me with shooting the standup and interview, but the rest of the camera work is mine.
